Md.Nasir uddin(special correspondent) : Amar Bangladesh Party, AB Party, had a dialogue jointly with the leaders of Students against Discrimination, SAD, and Nagorik Committee, (National Citizen Committee) to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the office of the president and constitutional ramification once it becomes vacant.
The party held this dialogue in the capital Dhaka on Monday (October 28, 2024).
The AB Party leaders raised concerns over recent statements by President Shahabuddin Chuppu, echoing with the interim admiration already expressed, which have sparked public outrage and widespread calls for his resignation.
The AB Party presented several key issues and recommendations for national dialogue and consensus: In the recommendations, the party says,Immediate Resignation of the President: Given that the president has allegedly violated his oath and engaged in misconduct, AB Party supports his immediate resignation to restore public confidence;
Supreme Court Review: AB Party suggests that if constitutional questions arise from the president’s resignation, the Supreme Court could provide clarity, as it did during the interim government’s formation;
Clarification of Government’s Nature: AB Party called for consensus on whether the current government is a constitutional or revolutionary government, as this distinction affects governance decisions;
Declaration of a National Proclamation: AB Party proposed a declaration reflecting the historical student uprising to guide the government’s essential decisions terming it as the ‘Proclamation of Second Republic’;
Constitutional Reforms: AB Party advised swift constitutional reforms or rewriting through dialogue with all political parties and stakeholders to ensure stability;
Reformation of Interim Government: The party advocated restructuring the government to incorporate a broader coalition, thereby, increasing inclusivity and trust.
AB Party concluded with a call for national unity, emphasizing that past sacrifices must not go in vain and urging all political actors to work toward consensus on pressing constitutional and electoral issues. Key representatives at the meeting included Mujibur Rahman Manju, Member Secretary of the Party, Asaduzzaman Fuaad, Barrister Zubair Ahmed Bhuiyan, both barrister-at-law and Joint Member Secretary, Sunny Abdul Haque, a barrister-at-law and in-charge of Shadow affairs, Nasreen Sultana Mily, a barrister-at-law and in-charge of AB Party Women and other senior leaders. Nasir Abdullah, Samantha Sharmin, Ariful Islam Adeeb from Nagorik Committee, Sarjis Alam, Arif Sohel, Hannan Masud from SAD were in attendance, among others.
